Roller Coaster: something resembling a roller coaster

especially : behavior, events, or experiences characterized by sudden and extreme changes

For us first-time parents or those already in the know, parenting can feel like riding a death defying roller coaster. It begins with a lot of heart pounding anticipation, elevates you hundreds of feet in the air, then suddenly drops you into weightlessness. It whiplashes you with unexpected twists and turns and loops. Some parts of the ride may be bumpy, or rickety, or smooth (but what fun is a smooth ride???). You question why you're on this thrill ride, was it a good decision or a bad decision, and does it even matter at this point?!? Then, before you can come to your senses, the ride is over and you realize how fast it all went by.
