Letter to Ash: When You Cry

It’s tough being a 10-year-old 5th Grader, during a pandemic.

Ash,

I wrote this poem for you while you were sleeping. I really wanted to come in and snuggle you, but I also wanted to respect your alone time.

When You Cry

September 3, 2020 | 11:02 PM

Ash, when you cry

I feel your distress

I hear how scared you feel

I see the pain in your face.

When I reach out to you

My instincts try to hug it away

Comfort and console

Your heart and your mind

Aching in pain and fear.

My heart breaks for you

My eyes cry for you

My words want to shower you

With hope.

I want to embrace you in my arms

Hug you so close to my heart

So that my heartbeat

Brings you comfort and reassurance.

Ash, when you cry

Believe me when I tell you

That you are a good boy

That you can get through this challenge

That you can win over this frustration.

You can be the boy who overcomes

The challenges that brings him to anger.

You can be the boy who meets his fear

With bravery and self-confidence.

You can be the boy who can do

What he thinks he cannot.

You can be the boy who does these things

Because you are that boy who can do it.

I believe in you, Ash,

Even when you do not believe in yourself

Even when you tell yourself mean words

Even when you push me away

Ash, I believe in you.

You are my heartbeat.

You are my sunshine.

You are my shooting star.

You are my son.

Love you with all of my heart,

Mom
